Our SEN Base, called 'The Nest' is an integral part of our mainstream primary school community. At West End all our classes are named after birds so 'The Nest' is a place where different birds can come and still find their place. We are committed to creating a safe, happy, and nurturing environment where every child is valued, respected, and supported to achieve their full potential. We support a wide range of needs through flexible, personalised approaches that enable pupils to make meaningful social and academic progress, whether through access to the curriculum or bespoke learning. By fostering confidence, belonging, and strong relationships, we empower children to thrive within the school community and grow towards their individual potential.
We recognise and celebrate the individuality of each pupil and provide a provision that meets a wide range of needs. Through strong relationships, consistent routines, and a caring approach, we ensure that all children feel comfortable, confident, and secure in their learning environment.
We support pupils to make meaningful social, emotional, and academic progress. Learning opportunities are carefully planned to align with the mainstream curriculum where appropriate, while also offering bespoke, personalised tasks that reflect individual strengths, interests, and developmental stages. This flexible approach enables children to access learning in ways that are meaningful and achievable for them.
Inclusion is at the heart of our practice. Pupils in 'The Nest' are encouraged and supported to engage with the wider school community, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect. We work closely with families, staff, and external professionals to ensure that provision is responsive, aspirational, and centred on the needs of each child.
Our aim is for every child to feel happy, safe, and nurtured, and to leave our school with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
The Nest is based in its own classroom in the heart of the school. Within the classroom there are sensory opportunities such as a creative space and sand play. There is also a calm sensory tent for children seeking a calmer atmosphere and a side room for more physical movement needs. There is also access to sensory circuit equipment. Key stage 2 children have individualised workstations and there is also a separate 'Nest' workspace within the Key stage 2 area to help aid their transition out of 'The Nest' and into secondary school.
